Bob Marley may have been onto something when he said, “when it hits you, you feel no pain”.

Feeling down?  Put on some upbeat music to help you get out of the funk and into “uptown funk”. Or perhaps you want some somber tunes to accompany your misery? Bored and feeling the need to make a daily chore a bit more exciting? Turn up the volume on your favorite classics and tada; your broom has magically turned into a microphone and you’re performing at Radio City Music Hall, like a rock star!

Now, I’m sure we don’t have to twist your arm to get you into the mood to “twist and shout”, but for fun let’s look at some science-backed facts about the power of music.

Music can:

According to the American Music Therapy Association, “Music Therapy is the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program.”

By using the word “intervention”, the Association signifies that music is used as an outside tool to foster a therapeutic process. Scientifically speaking, this works because, as the American Psychology Association states, “music and motion are neurologically intertwined, and…motor areas of the brain may be key to our ability to perceive music’s beat.”

Put simply, music affects us. Whether it be R&B, reggae, swing, pop, jazz or jingles, each musical genre affects us differently.

But it’s more than just your spirits that can be lifted by music! The American Psychology Association goes as far as to say that music therapy can enhance or diminish symptoms of not only psychological ailments, but also that those who had suffered from “stroke, Parkinson’s disease or accidents learn to walk again—to the cadences of carefully chosen music.”

Pretty powerful stuff there, wouldn’t you say?!

Whether you want to stay in your current state or foster an emotional change you can use music to encourage a feeling within, so turn that tune up.
