Hair can be a thing of beauty, pride and confidence …. but only if it’s where you WANT said hair to be. Luscious locks are great on your head but not so much on your legs, which is why for as long as there have been methods to enhance the hair that you do want, there have been methods to remove the hair that you don’t want.
Choosing the right process of hair removal can be tricky. Not all procedures will work for everyone. When choosing how to go about removing your unwanted hair it’s important to be informed about each available option. If you go the route of a professional treatment, talk to your technician about the pros and cons of each method when it comes to your specific hair type and skin tone.

Also known as “pulsed light”, Laser Hair Removal, has become extremely popular in the past few years due to its reputation for speed and efficiency. This method targets specific areas of hair growth with a beam of concentrated light, which eradicate hair follicles at their roots.
Results for Laser Hair Removal have been proven to be most effective for people with dark hair and light skin. Most people require at least 5-7 treatments with 6 – 8 weeks between each treatment. An annual touch up is recommended as well.
Electrolysis differs from laser in that instead of targeting the hair follicles with light, it uses electronic energy. A tiny needle is inserted into the skin where the undesired hair growth occurs. The needle slides down to the cell responsible for the hair’s growth and destroys the cell.
This process is painful and often topical anesthetics are used to numb the area that the needle will be entering. The needle can leave a tiny scar to the skin’s pigment and is recommended for people with a fair skin tone.
Waxing has been a mainstream method of hair removal for decades. Wax is spread thinly over the skin where the hair removal is desired. A cloth paper is then pressed on top and pulled off in a quick movement against the direction of hair growth. Hair usually doesn’t start to grow back until 2 – 3 weeks and another session is not usually required until 4 – 6 weeks after your original session.
This method of hair removal pulls the hair from its root, but doesn’t destroy the actual hair follicle. The hair follicles are left exposed after waxing which is why it is important to get waxed in a highly hygienic environment and to use an antibacterial lotion after the procedure is done.
Shaving can be done with an electric or strait razor and is the same idea as cutting hair, but when shaving you’re cutting your hair very, very short! Shaving is a short term and easy solution for hair removal. Since the hair follicles are not being disturbed at all, the effects will only last for a day to a week.
Shaving can irritate the skin and cause ingrown hairs, so it’s best to follow the rules when it comes to shaving. Mainly to make sure the hair is wet first and that you shave in the direction that the hair grows.
Topical treatments dissolve the hair proteins with a chemical compound. Whereas shaving “cuts” the hair, topical treatments dissolve the hair leaving less stubble. This treatment, like shaving, lasts about a week.
It’s important to note that these lotions and creams are NOT recommended for any area around the eyes or genitals.
