As much as the holidays might be happy, gearing up for them can be overwhelming. We often lose ourselves in the process, not knowing how to prioritize in our already-busy lives of work, family, and other activities. Here are some tips for lowering your holiday stress.
1. Buy Now. Whatever you need, make the list now, checkin’ it twice, and then don’t be naughty to yourself – be nice. That is to say, the nice thing to do is to go ahead and buy everything now, a couple of weeks ahead of time. All the gifts – now. All the disposable dishes and flatware – now. All the storable food – now. Knowing it’s done is a huge weight off your shoulders.
2. Something old, something new. Decorating is a task which needs time dedicated, and might need a kick start. Many of us have our holiday decorations box that we bring out every year in order to savor our own traditions of décor, so this year, why not purchase at least one new type of decoration in order to spice it up and give you one more thing to smile about? In addition, have a decorating party – invite a few family members or friends (who will not stress you out!), pour some wine, and get hanging!
3. Give Yourself a Necessity. Ever considered a spa treatment a necessity? Well now’s the time. You need carved-out, dedicated time and space for you, and a good massage or facial is ideal. Not only will a spa treatment leave you feeling cared for, you’ll feel more revived to take on the tasks at hand. Don’t think of it as a gift – think of it as necessary personal maintenance!
4. Use Heat. Did you know how much heat can lower your stress levels? Consider relaxing to tea, use a hot water bottle on your back, and indulge in a hot shower (or better yet, bath) at least (!) once/day.
5. Keep Exercising. Don’t let holidays get in the way of your routine. What? Are you joking? No, we’re not – at least not in terms of exercise. Your workout routine should remain the same in order to keep you feeling your best. The endorphin release you get from exercise, as well as the burnt calories, all affect how you feel about the holidays. Since you know you want to feel awesome, it’s a must that exercise remain a regular part of your life. Remember that decorating party mentioned above? You can incorporate an exercise session in it as well.
The holiday season is upon us, in all its goodness. Let’s let ourselves prepare in as organized and stress-free way as possible by being diligent about retaining a healthy lifestyle. This way, we can better enjoy the holidays when they come.
Season’s Greetings, everyone!
