Let’s face it, we Miamians don’t know a real winter unless we’re transplanted from the north. Anything lower than 60 degrees Fahrenheit and that’s it, we’re freezing. In fact, according to the Holiday Weather site, average temperatures for Miami remain steady in the 60’s and 70’s between November and March. That means a Miami winter is really spring – let’s call it winter-spring. So now that March has begun, and official spring is a couple of weeks away, how will that make any difference for us? How can we benefit from the newness of spring that is all the talk in the media, and enjoyed by our friends and family in the colder states? Seriously, why can’t Miami have a marked change for the spring season, too?
Well we’re not going to change the weather on our own – that’s up to the Universe, and, well, global warming. But what we can do is integrate a spring-like mode into our lives. You can, in fact, foster a springtime mindset when you live in a year-round warm climate
Here are a few ways to enjoy spring, even if the weather won’t be that different.
- Go North while there’s still time. Fancy a ski trip? Or just a visit to the Big Apple to catch a couple of Broadway shows? Do that in early March and you’ll likely still feel at least a bit of the winter bite. Nothing like a few days where you need one of those puffy stuffy Down coats to appreciate the half-year of springtime in Miami.
- Take advantage before bemoaning the upcoming summer heat. By April, the weather starts to heat up in Miami, beginning its uphill climb until reaching its summer peak, which is often in the 100’s. Therefore, Miami’s winter-spring season is actually the ideal weather, and March is your last hurrah to enjoy it. So, during the month of March, do as many outside activities as you can in order to fully take advantage of the best Miami weather of the year.
- Spring clean & redecorate. Just because the outside doesn’t look or feel different once springtime comes around doesn’t mean that you can’t foster a renewed feeling on the inside of your home. You can spring clean as well as anyone who just put away their puffy stuffy Down coat for storage. Likewise, consider brightening up your home décor, or otherwise making some interior design upgrades.
- Retail therapy. Even if the weather doesn’t change, fashion does change by season. You can foster a renewed feeling by refurbishing a few items in your wardrobe, even if it’s a small accessory like a scarf or hat.
- Sign up for a class. Registration for summer programs might already have begun. Check out your local offerings and see how you might want to enlighten yourself. Or look into museum schedules – they often offer a series of courses on a variety of topics.
Springtime is not necessarily based on the weather – it’s a mindset. Therefore, no matter the time of year, we can always implement the proverbial spring in our step. Happy March, Miamians!
