As June approaches the sun here in Florida is getting stronger. A good time to review healthy habits for protecting yourself from skin related cancers, such as Melanoma. Protecting your skin from UV Rays is something everyone should be conscious of year round.
While Melanoma is one of the less common forms of skin cancer, it is much more dangerous than some others if not found in the early stages.
Like all health risks, prevention is key! Here are some tips for protecting yourself from sun damaging hazards:
- Wear sunblock daily and stay out of the sun for extended periods of time, especially during peak hours (10am – 4pm in the summer months).
- Make sure to use a “broad spectrum” sunscreen. This type of sunblock protects skin from both UVB rays and UVA rays.
- Physical blocks like, Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide, also offer extra protection from both UVB and UVA rays. Check that your sunblock contains both of these ingredients (additionally both of them are non-irritating and non-allergenic).
- It takes 15 minutes for sunblock to be absorbed by your skin. Plan accordingly and apply 15 minutes before heading out.
- Apply generously! Not only is it incredibly important to make sure you have an even layer of sunblock on, you also want to make sure that you don’t forget your neck, ears, toes and chest area (an area many women forget to protect).
- If you plan on swimming or going to a water park use water-resistant sunblock and re-apply every two hours.
- Ultraviolet rays pass through the clouds, so don’t skip protection on a cloudy day.
- Choose a 15 – 30 SPF. While SPF 30 only protects your skin 4% more than SPF 15, it’s advised for people who live in the southern part of the United States to use SPF 30. SPF 15 is fine for people who live in the northern part of the United States.
- Build up your SPF protection by using SPF make-up like moisturizers, BB and CC creams, base powder and lip balm along with sunblock.
- Dress for success by wearing a wide brim hat and sunglasses when you’re outdoors. If you lead an active lifestyle consider investing in some sun protective clothing.
- Self-examine your skin from head to toe regularly. Pay close attention to moles, birthmarks, beauty marks and brown spots to see if they change color or grow. Talk to your doctor if you find anything suspicious.
Wishing you a wonderful, fun-filled and above all, a healthy summer ahead!
